March Break is upon us in Hamilton and I know just from weekends with my toddler that it can be hard to think of ideas for how to keep him busy and having fun. Are you wondering what to do in Hamilton this March Break? I thought I’d put together a list of all of the fun things happening in Hamilton this week for March break in hopes of saving my fellow Mamas and Dads the mental workout of figuring out what to do while the kids are home! I hope something peeks your interest– I’ve even tried to include some free or frugal options so March Break doesn’t need to break the bank!
Here we go, in no particular order:
Swimming at Westmount Recreation Centre– There are tons of leisure and family swims available during the day and in the evenings. You can check the March Break Schedule and take the kids to burn off some energy having fun in the pools! Remember, the Wednesday afternoon swim is FREE!
Art Gallery of Hamilton– The AGH has extended its hours to accommodate March Break and is open all week! The good news is that Gallery Level 2 admission is sponsored and FREE to enter, so this makes for a frugal and enriching outing. The Kim Adams Bruegel-Bosch Bus exhibit looks appealing to kids, and I could definitely envision an impromptu game of “I Spy” with this one!
Spiders Alive at the RBG- For parents who aren’t squeamish, Spiders Alive at the Royal Botanical Gardens is a quick trip from Hamilton! I’ve heard from friends that there are lots of interactive and learning experiences for kids of all ages. There are March Break “bonus” programs every day on various topics like birds, dinosaurs and snakes!
Maple Town at Mountsberg Conservation Area- Maple Town is on right now at Mounsberg, and this is one outing that you could definitely turn into a day trip. A visit to Maple Town will teach your kids how maple syrup is harvested and made and is included in your regular gate admission to Mountsberg. Mountsberg has much more to offer, like the play barn, raptor conservatory, farm animal barn, trails and more. You can read our Mountsberg recap on the blog. We also visited Mountsberg for Christmas Town and if Maple Town is anything similar, the whole family will have a great time!
Hamilton Civic Museums– This year, admission to Hamilton’s Civic Museums is FREE with a library card. So hurry to your local library and get one– each member of the family needs to have one in order to gain entry. I’ve heard that you need something that show’s your child’s name and address (i.e. a letter, a piece of ID, etc.) in order for them to get their own library card… so be prepared! Many of the museums seem to have March Break programming on, such as The Magical World of Wizarding at the Children’s Museum, Capture the Moment at Dundurn National Historic Site, Anthromorphia at Whitehern Historic House & Garden, and Unplugged at Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology.
The New Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse– The Spring Tide Bulb Show is on right now at the brand new Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse. The theme is a Hawaiian Luau, and it’s the absolutely perfect escape from the cold, damp weather we’ve been having. Little ones will be thrilled by the waterfall and koi pond, and special feature bridge. Additionally, I thought it was a great learning experience that they’d planted fruit trees and then displayed the fruits in baskets in front of the trees so the kids can learn more about where their food comes from. In another part of the greenhouse there is a Kids Zone which features games, crafts and fun activities. Admission is FREE with a donation to Hamilton Food Share, and this would be a great afternoon out if you combined it with a walk around Gage Park and a stop by the playground!
Hamilton Library March Break Programs– The HPL has some additional programming on for March Break that are all FREE! Programs include so many different topics like Little Artists, STREAM Learning Lab, Playdough Club, Bubbleology, LEGO Mania, Metis Storytelling and a lot more. Check out the library’s events calendar to find a program close to you! It’ll get you and the kids out of the house for a bit and they’ll definitely learn something new!
Queen Street EarlyON Special Programs– Our favourite EarlyON location, at Queen Street has some special March Break programming like Sports Day, Pizza Day, Science, Art Attack, and Movie Day. All of their programs are FREE, and there’s something to do for everyone from birth to 6 years old– and parents can interact with other parents while their kids explore the centre. I made some great friends at EarlyON and found the leaders to be very helpful as well when it came to child development questions!
Petting Zoo at Harper’s Garden Centre– Harper’s is putting on a petting zoo on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week from 12-3pm, for FREE! There will be pony rides available for $2 as well. We went last year and our little guy was thrilled to see the sheep, fancy chickens and more. It was also an inspiring trip for the Mamas as we could grab a coffee and check out some succulents and plants for indoors! Make sure you wear your rubber boots as the parking lot can get muddy!
